Man Shot and Hospitalized in Providence Overnight

Providence police say a man drove himself to Rhode Island Hospital after being shot in the city overnight. 

About Incident 

Shortly after midnight Sunday morning, police were sent to Payton Street by Broad Street and Roger Williams Park for a report of shots fired.

At that time, police said they were alerted to a Honda Accord operating at a high rate of speed on Prairie Avenue, then Eddy Street, before coming to a stop at Rhode Island Hospital. 

Police say at the hospital, they found the driver — a male in his early 20s — to be covered in blood and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

He was taken into the hospital for treatment. 

According to police, the passenger in the vehicle said they had been driving on Peyton Street when someone in another vehicle shot at them. 

Police said that they canvassed the scene and found multiple spent shell casings. 

The Honda was also observed to have ballistic damage.

Detectives are currently investigating.
