Man Stabbed While Using Portable Toilets Next to Providence Pedestrian Bridge

Providence Police are investigating a stabbing at the Mike Van Leesten Memorial Pedestrian Bridge on Wednesday. 

The victim was reportedly attacked while using a portable toilet adjacent to the bridge.

About Incident 

Early Wednesday morning, police were flagged down on Dorrance Street by a witness who said his friend had been stabbed.

Police said they then encountered the victim -- a male in his 40s -- who appeared to be injured, with a large amount of blood observed on his shirt. 

The victim told police there had been a confrontation by the portable toilets next to the bridge.

According to police, the victim said he was using a toilet, at which time the suspect opened the door, punched him, and stabbed him. 

Rescue transported the victim to Rhode Island Hospital. 

Police said that based on witness descriptions, they located and apprehended a suspect shortly after the incident, who said he had stabbed the victim in self-defense. 

Detectives are currently investigating.
