Rhode Island Lt. Governor Sabina Matos has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for the office on Tuesday.

As of 9 PM with 90% of votes reported, Matos was leading with 46% of the vote.

Ruggerio, in her endorsement interview with GoLocal, made a strong case that she has the experience — and fortitude — to take over as governor if the incumbent were suddenly to leave the scene.

She has had a diverse collection of professional experiences, as a manager in the private sector, as well as an advocate, including, of course, as a legislator.

Matos's calm, soft-spoken demeanor belies a steely resolve. Make no mistake about it, she is a seasoned politician who fought some tough battles in Providence, taking on Mayor Jorge Elorza on the budget while serving as City Council president and negotiating much-needed changes to the Tax Stabilization Agreement (TSA) structure in the face of powerful special interests.

“I am so humbled and honored to be Rhode Island’s Democratic Nominee for Lt. Governor. Having the opportunity to provide little girls across the state with a vision of what they can be is one of the greatest privileges in my life, and one of the most important reasons I got into public service,” Matos said. “Our state needs leaders who stand up for every day Rhode Islanders who are struggling with rising costs of living, especially housing. We need leaders who stand up for women’s rights and fight for safer communities.”
