Musings While On Cloud Nine

Just thinking …

Wow! Could the 4th of July weekend weather have been any better?

Here’s hoping that last week’s visit of the America’s Cup to Rhody isn’t the last time we see the “Old Mug” back where it belongs. I know we may be underdogs to the trendy West Coast as the next Cup defense venue, but I really admire and support the effort to get the races back to the Ocean State.

Weather Trivia Question of the Week #1: Rhode Island’s all-time record high temperature is 104 degrees set on August 2, 1975. What are the only two states that have lower all-time record highs? (Answer below.)

Is that 10 or 11 Red Sox players on the Disabled List right now? They might be able to win a few more games with the “Patches and Band Aid” lineup they’ve come up with but it’s bound to get them in the long run. Or will their superior, deep starting pitching keep them in it?

Weather Trivia Question of the Week #2: More temperature stuff. What is the all-time record high temperature recorded in the United States and where did it occur? No so big hint: It’s NOT in New England! (Answer below.)

I’ve got to say that the World Cup has grown on me. It’s probably the event and not the sport that has me watching. Gulp! I’m actually looking forward to the semi-final and final matches. However, I can’t promise that I’ll be watching much soccer after the World Cup matches end. BTW … Did you know that Uruguay won the first World Cup in 1930?

Our last official heat wave occurred almost two years ago. In 2008 from July 16 through July 21 the mercury hit 90 or higher on six consecutive days. An official heat wave consists of at least three consecutive days of high temperatures of 90 or better.

The Bristol 4th of July Parade was terrific again this year, as usual. Just me again, but was it sort of weird and a bit anti-climactic to have it on the 5th ? I know all the reasons it happened that way but I really feel the 4th should be celebrated on the 4th! Using the same criteria, I guess the Declaration of Independence would have been adopted on July 5th if the 4th were a Sunday in 1776! Alas, it wasn’t … it was a Thursday.

Weather Trivia Answer #1: Alaska (no brainer) and…yes, Hawaii. Both have all-time record highs of 100 degrees, four degrees lower than Rhode Island. All the other states are higher.

Weather Trivia Answer #2: 134 degrees set on July 10, 1913 in Death Valley, CA.

Oooooops … gotta go. Got some eggs frying on the sidewalk.
