NAACP Providence & Newport Branches to Hold Joint Meeting on Hate Crimes in RI

The NAACP Providence and Newport branches will hold a joint meeting to discuss the attacks on African-Americans.

“Our strategy between now and 2020 with the next five years is to make sure as a membership-based advocacy organization that we are deeply rooted in civic engagement and challenges,” said Jim Vincent, President Providence Branch. 

The meeting titled “We Cannot Rest Now” will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at the Roger Williams School of Law.

Hate Crimes in RI

Hate crimes in Rhode Island have increased 1,300 percent according to the most recent study by the Anti - Defamation League (ADL).

“The current racial climate is reminiscent of a time that I have not seen since the late sixties and early seventies,” said Newport County Branch President Jimmy Winters. 

The “ADL identified 1,986 anti-Semitic incidents perpetrated throughout the United States in 2017.

That is an increase of 57% over the 1,267 incidents reported in 2016.
