NEW: Aponte Elected Council President, Matos Pro Tempore

Council President Aponte
Veteran City Councilman Luis Aponte has been elected President of the Providence City Council with nine votes of the potential 15 members. The election of Aponte sets up a dynamic new leadership for the City of Providence and a potential battle between the Council and the Mayor-Elect, Jorge Elorza. The election took place today in the Democratic caucus.

Aponte, a progressive Democrat, is expected to challenge the Mayor for setting the City's legislative agenda. The election took place in a caucus held today.

Elorza's Council supporters opposed Aponte's election to lead the Council.

Councilwoman Sabina Matos will serve as President Pro Tempore.

Aponte was an early and strong supporter of Governor-elect Gina Raimondo. In the Democratic primary, Aponte supported Michael Solomon. When Solomon lost the primary, Aponte did not make an endorsement in the General Election for Mayor.

The vote for all of the postions and committee asignments are scheduled to take place as part of the first City Council meeting of the new term.

Aponte (Ward 10) ran for City Council first in 1994 against John Rollins and lost by less than 100 votes. He came back in 1998 and was elected making him the first Latino member of the City Council in Providence.

Later he teamed with Councilman Miguel Luna on a range of legislative and community initiatives. Luna passed away in August on 2011.

Other members of the leadership team include Councilman Kevin Jackson (Ward 3-D) who will serve as Majority Leader.
