Boston-Based Charter School Group Looks to Open Mayoral Academy in RI

Boston-based Excel Charter Schools are looking to expand into RI.
Excel Academy Charter Schools has announced it applying to open a Mayoral Academy school in Rhode Island to provide expanded educational opportunities for Providence, Central Falls, and North Providence families.

Excel Academy Rhode Island has applied to provide an integrated Kindergarten-12th grade education to approximately 2,100 students. The mission of Excel Academy Rhode Island is to prepare students to succeed in high school and college, apply their learning to solve relevant problems, and engage productively in their communities.

“Over the last 17 years, our successful teaching philosophy has remained consistent: when a student has the support and tools to pursue a productive post-secondary pathway aligned with personal identity and values, it can fundamentally change their life trajectory,” said Owen Stearns, CEO of Excel Academy.  “I am excited about the opportunity to be a part of a coordinated effort with parents in Rhode Island to improve students' access to high-quality education options.”

About Excel

According to Excel Academy, it has a track record of success in raising student achievement, particularly for differently-abled and multilingual learners.

The educational model is grounded by four key drivers of success: systems, support, rigor, and joy. At Excel Academy, high expectations, and an inclusive approach to teaching students in need of special education support and services are woven into the daily fabric of the school.

Excel Academy’s students have "achieved remarkable success at the middle and high school levels," according to the school. They state:

"Excel Academy students have consistently been ranked as top performers among peer schools in Massachusetts based on the percentage of our students who are Meeting or Exceeding Expectations on state exams. Excel Academy prioritizes an approach that is both rigorous and inclusive."

●      Nearly eighty percent of the students come from low-income families.

●      Twenty-percent of the student population qualifies for special education services, and the percentage of students who are differently-abled who meet or exceed expectations on state assessments is double the state’s average.

●      Sixty-percent of their students' first language is non-English, and 10% more of their students who are multilingual learners meet or exceed expectations on state exams in the 8th grade in comparison to their sending districts.
