Britt's Attorney Accuses State's Lead Witness of Lying Over Campaign Contributions

Shawna Lawton - Defeated 2016 GOP primary candidate for House District 15, took the stand on Monday.
The first morning of the political corruption trial of the State of Rhode Island vs. Jeffrey Britt unveiled several pieces of new information --  including Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello campaign operative Britt's attorney accusing the state's lead witness of lying.

Shawna Lawton, the defeated Republican primary candidate in the 2016 House District 15 race whose mailer — and its funding — supporting Democrat Mattiello ultimately led to the convening of a grand jury, was the first witness to take the stand.

Lawton — and her testimony — came under fire from Britt’s attorney Robert Corrente, former U.S. Attorney for the State of Rhode Island, on Monday.

Corrente questioned in cross-examination how Lawton admitted she knew the two campaigns coordinated the mailing effort — but in the press, had at the time denied any knowledge.

Meetings, Press -- and Testimony

In questioning, Lawton told Rhode Island Assistant Rhode Island Attorney General John Moreira that following her primary defeat, she met Mattiello operative Britt on three occasions.

Lawton said she had felt “ganged up on” by the state Republican Party — and was open to hearing from Britt why she should support Mattiello.

At the final meeting, which took place at Brewed Awakenings in Warwick, Lawton said she gave Britt a check for the production of a mailer in support of Mattiello, and in turn Britt gave her two checks — one from Mattiello consultant Vic Pichette, and one from the wife of Mattiello’s direct mail consultant, Teresa Graham, to cover the contribution from her campaign account.

Corrente, in his cross-examination of Lawton, asked if she knew there had been coordination between two campaigns for the mailer.

“Yes,” said Lawton.

Corrente, however, then presented the transcript of the interview Lawton had with radio host Dan Yorke, following the release of the mailer in 2016, prior to the election.

The Attorney General’s office objected to the introduction of the new evidence on Monday.

On the show, Corrente pointed out that York asked Lawton, “Did the Mattiello campaign help to finance this mailer?”

Corrente then pointed out Lawton's response.

“You said no,” said Corrente.
