NEW: Brown University Blasting Bedrock at Site of New Performing Arts Center in Providence

"At the site for the future Performing Arts Center, there is bedrock that needs to be excavated before construction can begin. The construction team is using a technology called micro-fracturing to prepare the rock for excavation. This technology significantly localizes the impact compared to conventional explosives or blasting agents, which means a much less noticeable effect in the vicinity of the site," said Clark.

"Over the coming few months, one to two micro-fracture events will take place during each work day, between 9 am and 3 pm in all cases. In addition to signage, neighbors in the immediate vicinity were informed directly before the first micro-fractures took place beginning in February," said Clark.
