NEW: Cicilline Blasts GOP on Looming Shutdown

With a government shutdown looming closer and closer, Congressman David Cicilline released a statement disapproving of the decision and criticizing the Republicans.

Cicilline agrees with fellow Democrat, Senator Jack Reed in that the shutdown is needless and potentially damaging to our economy.

“A shutdown is completely avoidable because an agreement had been reached on budget numbers,” Cicillin said in a Press Release late today, and yet the possibility of a shutdown remains.

Cicilline blames Republicans’ unwillingness to compromise, stating that the “Democratic leadership has offered Republicans many different opportunities to vote to keep the government open; again, Republicans have said no”. He believes that extreme members of the Republican Party are using controversial policies -- like their refusal to finance Planned Parenthood and other health service providers – to “hijack” the budget process.

“These high-stakes political games undermine the public’s confidence in government,” said Cicilline. But his accusations and blame do nothing to raise the public’s confidence in the Congressman’s abilities.

“Rhode Islanders and all Americans expect us to work together and do what’s right for the future of our country,” he continues. But if Cicilline’s abysmal approval ratings are any indication, it seems Rhode Islanders expectations are not being met.

Even if the government shutdown goes into effect, Cicilline will continue to keep his offices open and he and his staff promise to keep working to serve his constituents. He states that he and his staff are available to answer questions during this “confusing times."
