NEW: Construction Project Halts Traffic Downtown Wednesday

A large-scale construction project halted traffic and left locals wondering whether to go around or under a large crane outside the Turk's Head Building on Weybosset Street Wednesday.

The commotion was the result of a plan to rebuild offices in the building. To complete the project, East Providence-based New England Drywall purchased 24 crane-loads of insulation and 304 sheets of drywall, which had to be lifted 12 sheets at a time to the the 11th floor construction site.

Steven Lieberman, a truck driver whose company provided the building materials for the project, said he thought the job of moving the sheetrock and insulation would take about four hours in total. Lieberman helped the Shaughnessy crane operator to load the materials. Normally, he said, Marjam would have provided one of their boom trucks (which are able to extend up to seven stories) to transfer the materials, however, since the construction site was on the 11th floor, a bigger machine was needed.

Though it might have look like a dangerous job, Lieberman, who has been driving trucks for for about 10 years, said he has never seen any accidents. "

"I've seen stuff happen, but I've never seen anybody get hurt," he said. "Stuff gets inspected, people pay attention. That's the important part. You've got to pay attention to what you're doing."
