NEW: Councilman Zurier Says He Will Not Resign

Providence City Councilman Sam Zurier said Monday that he does not plan to resign following an attempt to solicit a political donation from a couple whose sidewalk he helped get paved last year.

A new Facebook group that had 31 members within an hour of being created is calling for Zurier to step down, but when asked via e-mail if he’ll resign, Zurier issued a one-word response: “No.”

The Providence Journal reported Sunday that Zurier, who represents part of the East Side, sent a letter to Dee Dee and Gary Whitman asking for a contribution after the couple’s sidewalk was paved. Gary Whitman is a quadriplegic.

Zurier confirmed that he did send the letter and has issued an apology.
