Deer Carcass Removed From Pond, Following GoLocal Story

A deer carcass has been removed from Juniper Pond in West Warwick, after a GoLocal story was published regarding neighbors’ complaints about the smell.

GoLocal spoke with West Warwick Fire Chief Jeffrey Varone, who confirmed the deer was removed on Wednesday morning.

As for why the action took days, Varone explained the following.

“We were looking for DEM to remove it, I guess DEM doesn’t remove that any longer,” said Varone. “So we were trying to figure out what we were going to do.”

Varone said four workers from West Warwick Fire and DPW removed the animal.

As for how the animal died, Varone had a few theories.

“We don’t know how the deer died,” said Verone. “One of the neighbors said he had seen the deer the day prior, and the deer was swimming across, looking back, like it was trying to escape something.”

“This neighbor showed me that there had been a bobcat going through the area; there’s a coyote,” said Varone, who noted the deer had a “few small bites” on it.

Varone, who says the deceased deer is a “rare occurrence,” said he believes DPW now plans on burying the animal.
