NEW: DEM Preserves 105 Acres in Burrillville

Rhode Island’s Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has acquired 105 acres of land to add to the state’s 1,748-acre Black Hut Management Area in Burrillville.

Located on Cherry Farm Road, the property consists of mature forest stands, an old quarry, several vernal wetlands and small streams. It connects two portions of the state’s existing Black Hut parcels around Spring Lake, solidifying the Black Hut boundary and preventing encroachment onto state land.

An existing series of walking trails on the property will be enhanced for recreational use, and an area for a small parking lot is present.

Funding for the parcel, which was purchased from Harrisville Quarries Associates, was provided by a $218,557.50 Wildlife Restoration Grant through the US Fish & Wildlife Service, and $125,352.50 from DEM Open Space Bond funds.

“DEM is pleased that we have been able to permanently protect this valuable wildlife habitat and ensure that it remains undeveloped,” said DEM Director Janet Coit. “Our forests provide a multitude of benefits, from cool, green areas to enjoy, to safeguarding our rivers and groundwater supplies.”
