NEW: DEM Releases Letter Addressing Landfill Odor

The Department of Environmental Management expects to see "noticeable improvements" in air quality at the Johnston landfill by next week, according to a letter released today by the Department of Environmental Management (DEM).

The letter, which is addressed to Michael O'Connell, the Executive Director of Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, has not yet followed through on a corrective action plan for removing the odors at the landfill.

DEM Director Janet Coit said the Department will take additional measures to address the odors if corrections aren't made.

"The Department also reserves the right to take enforcement action, including the potential assessment of penalties, for all instances of regulator non-compliance," Coit wrote in the letter.
