NEW: Downtown Lawyer Now Representing Occupy Providence

A downtown lawyer is now representing the Occupy Providence movement as the city prepares to take legal action against the protesters, who have been camping in Burnside Park for over two weeks.

The city confirmed last week it would be taking the legal rout to evict the protesters rather than arresting them, which has happened to spinoff groups in other parts of the country.

The lawyer representing the protesters is Miriam Weizenbaum. She met with her new clients Monday.

Ironically, Weizenbaum’s firm, DeLuca & Weizenbaum, used to employee Matt Jerzyk, a top aide to Mayor Angel Taveras. Jerzyk now serves as Director of Government Relations and Senior Counsel to the Mayor.

The city contends that it never granted the Occupy Providence members the right to sleep in the park, although officials were aware it was happening since last Saturday. The Public Safety Commissioner and Mayor’s office would like the protesters to leave the park by 9:00pm each night.
