NEW: East Providence Movie Theater Allowed to Reopen After Being Closed By City

East Providence Cinemas was allowed to reopen on Tuesday, after being closed on Saturday by the city for "insufficient funds" on a check.
An East Providence movie theater was allowed to reopen on Tuesday afternoon. 

As GoLocal reported, East Providence Cinemas located on Newport Avenue was shut down by police on Saturday, due to insufficient funds when it bounced a check, according to the city. 

"The more than $9,000 owed to East Providence was for business license renewals,' said City Communications Director Patricia Resende on Tuesday.

"Theatre license, Sunday theatre license, [and] victualing license to sell food," said Resende, of what the theater owed the city. 

Resende said that the cinema was able to reopen on Tuesday.

"The owner was able to open for business this afternoon," said Resende. 

Latest in East Providence

GoLocal reported earlier on Tuesday, according to a letter from the City of East Providence to owner Ben Kafash, the cinema was shut down due to insufficient funds.

“We received check number 1683 returned for, “Reason A - Not Sufficient Funds” from Bank of America. The check is in the amount of $9,250.00 and was dated December 17, 2019,” wrote the City in the "Cease and Desist" letter sent to Kafash on January 17.
