NEW: Esserman Placed on Leave in New Haven After Reports of Berating Waitress (UPDATED)

Dean Esserman placed on leave in New Haven following public incident -- and no-confidence vote by union.
Former Providence Police Chief Dean Esserman is taking a leave of absence as Police Chief in New Haven.

Esserman, who got a no-confidence vote by the New Haven Police Union earlier in July, was under scrutiny by New Haven Mayor Toni Harp after reports he publicly berated a waitress in town over the weekend.

Following several controversial incidents in recent weeks and months, New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman has agreed with Mayor Toni Harp to take a paid leave of absence. In a statement, New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said:

"Following my investigation of recent reports of conduct I consider unbecoming a public official, Chief of Police Dean Esserman and I have mutually agreed that he will take a 15 working-day, paid leave-of-absence, effective tomorrow. Beyond that, given the city’s policy and practice of honoring a presumption of confidentiality in personnel matters, there will be no further comment."

Latest Controversy for Esserman

The news came after Paul Haven for the The New Haven Independent wrote on Sunday:

Harp told the Independent Sunday that she plans to meet with aides Monday to discuss what action to take. She said options under consideration include having the chief go on “sabbatical.”

She said she is acting in light of new complaints that have come her way in past weeks about Esserman’s conduct within the department and with the public.

A trigger point was apparently a recent incident at Archie Moore’s bar and restaurant on Willow Street. Dining there on a Friday night, Esserman complained about the service he was receiving, allegedly berating the waitress at length and causing a ruckus.

New Haven - No Confidence in Esserman

In June, GoLocalProv.com wrote that Esserman was voted to move forward with a no-confidence vote by the New Haven Police Union executive board.

He received a no-confidence vote by the full union in July.
