NEW: Federal Judge Rules National Guard Illegally Performed Law Enforcement in LA

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer ruled on Tuesday that the Trump administration illegally ordered the National Guard to perform law enforcement activities during anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.

The lawsuit was filed by California Governor Gavin Newsom vs. "Donald Trump et al." 

Breyer wrote that the defendants violated the Posse Comitatus Act, which prevents the military from performing law enforcement duties on American soil.

While his order applies only to California, the decision comes as other cities including Chicago are facing the possibility of a similar National Guard mobilization.

As GoLocal reported, last week, Democratic governors warned Trump not to send National Guard troops into their respective states. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee signed on to the statement.

The governors called Trump’s strategy ‘chaotic federal interference.’
