Former United States State Representative Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name for consideration to be President-Elect Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General.

Thursday, Gaetz shared the following to his account X on Thursday:

I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday.  I appreciate their thoughtful feedback - and the incredible support of so many.  While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.

There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General.  Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.

I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history.  I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I'm certain he will Save America.

This past week, University of Virginia Political Science Chair Jennifer Lawless joined GoLocal CEO Josh Fenton to discuss Trump’s appointments, and the Democrats’ strategy now, following the 2024 election.

Fenton and Lawless sparred over a number of issues — including the dynamics of now former-Congressman Matt Gaetz being tapped by Trump for Attorney General.

“Democrats seem to be offended, but many Republicans seem to be more offended," said Fenton over the pick. "He was not a popular guy in the Republican House, he does not seem to be a particularly popular guy amongst Republican Senators - many are casting that his chances of confirmation are unlikely."
