NEW: Lawsuit Filed in Zeppole Salmonella Poisoning

A lawsuit will be filed by attorneys at the Boston law firm of Cooley Manion Jones on behalf of the parent of an unidentified minor boy against DeFusco’s Bakery Inc., the prime suspect in the series of incidents, after the child allegedly became ill after eating two of the company’s zeppoles. The symptoms described in the suit were abdominal cramping, diarrhea and fever.

The Rhode Island Department of Health announced a recall of DeFusco’s zeppoles on March 25. The bakery’s zeppoles were also sold to American Bakery Supplies, a West Warwick-based distributor which in turn sold them to other food retailers in Rhode Island. DeFusco’s has reportedly shut down for the time being.
The cause of the outbreak was raw egg contamination of the pastry shells. The Department of Health said the pastry shells used to make the zeppoles were stored in egg crates, where they most likely came into contact with the eggs.
