NEW: National Grid Claims Majority of Outages To Be Restored Monday

National Grid expects to have the vast majority of its Rhode Island customers back online by midnight on Monday. Leaving tens of thousands without. As of the time of the National Grid announcement more than 130,000 were without power.

Customers will get their power back on an ongoing basis in the meantime.

Wind-whipped snow and hurricane force wind gusts tore through the state beginning on Friday afternoon and continuing through Saturday afternoon. Coastal communities in the southern half of the state were particularly hard hit.

National Grid’s transmission system sustained significant damage, and there were more than 1,400 reports of wires down across the state. Impassable roads and blowing and drifting snow presented major challenges for crews trying to access and repair lines and equipment.

More than 2,000 crews are dedicated to restoring power in communities across Massachusetts and Rhode Island served by National Grid.
