NEW: NECAP Test Scores Show Some Improvement

Of the high school students taking the test, 33 percent proficient in math, an increase of 6 points, and they were 76 percent proficient in reading, an increase of 3 points on the NECAP (which stands for the New England Common Assessment Program).
RIDE also announced that the high school graduation rate was up one point, at 76 percent in 2010. As a result, the state met or “nearly met” 22 of the 31 statewide goals for testing, closing achievement gaps, and improving graduation rates. The goals are set by the federal Race to the Top grant.

A great deal of work remains to be done, and I look forward to leading a meaningful dialogue on the most appropriate and effective strategy for making our public schools the finest in the nation and the foundation for our state’s job creation and economic growth.”
Other key results:
■ In reading, 71 percent of elementary and 70 percent of middle-school students were proficient—up one point from the previous year.
■ In math, 61 percent of elementary students and 57 percent of middle school students were proficient—only the latter average changed, by one point.
■ In writing, 57 percent of Rhode Island students in grades 5, 8, and 11 were proficient.
Closing the achievement gap:
■ Black students in all grades combined improved by 2 points in math
■ Hispanic student climbed up 2 points in math
■ Poor students went up by 2 points in math
■ However, gaps of more than 15 points between these groups and overall statewide averages persist
