Abelson was 67.

"He was a quiet leader -- along the lines of Sister Ann Keefe -- he walked the walk, and made life better for people working at the grassroots level," said Mary K. Talbot, who was first introduced to Abelson working at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

"But he also had the ablity to converse and mix and mingle with the richest people in RI.  And he could always get people to give just a little bit more. Everyone loved him.  He knew that together, we could make a difference."

Talbot noted some of the programs Abelson helped start at the Food Bank.

"One of the things he came up with was the perishbile food program, which took off running, " said Talbot.  "He also started the traning program there, so people could learn how to become food workers.  He was involved with so many things -- City Year, AIDS Project RI.  Guy impacted so many people, who might not have known how he helped them."
