NEW: Occupy Providence to Organize Mass Account Closure at Bank of America

Day three of the Occupy Providence movement will include local activists flocking to Bank of America to close their accounts, according to an e-mailed statement sent out by the group early this morning.

The statement reads as follows:

“After their triumphant march through the city of Providence, the Rhode Islanders’ of the Occupy Providence General Assembly have decided by consensus that due to Bank of America’s criminal and immoral banking and lending practices to target the corporation in peaceful, nonviolent protest. Due to their major involvement in the subprime mortgage crisis in the late-2000s and during the federal bailout of 2009, Bank of America had received $45 billion dollars in taxpayers money, the majority of which went into the pockets of their avaricious top-level executives at Merrill Lynch. The greed has not ended; beginning in 2012, Bank of America will continue to prey on the people by laying off 30,000 employees and charging their customers with outrageous debit card fees in an attempt to balance their revenue losses.

“Occupy Providence asks the citizens of Rhode Island to come to Burnside Park (next to Kennedy Plaza) to withdraw their money and close their accounts today at the Bank of America Building in solidarity and show them the people will no longer allow them to harm the commonwealth. Protesters will meet in the park at 9:30AM, 11:30AM, and 3:00PM where they will move to the bank and take nonaggressive direct action. The occupation hasn’t ended and the movement has only begun. Join the occupation and show Bank of America you can see through their lies.”
