NEW: Occupy Providence Votes to Leave Park

The Occupy Providence encampment in Burnside Park will come to after more than two months after the protesters voted to leave the park in exchange for the city opening up a temporary homeless shelter.

The vote took place Wednesday evening and the protesters are expected to remove their belongings from the park by Jan. 2.

As the movement unfolded, Mayor Angel Taveras said he supported the public’s right to protest, but maintained that the protesters would not be allowed to remain in the park forever. At one point, the city requested the group leave the park, but police action was never taken.
