Members of the Jewelry District Association turned out Monday morning to bring attention to their opposition to the proposed 46-story tower by developer Jason Fane on the 195 land in Providence.

The 195 Commission voted at the end of March to approve the sale of the Parcel 42 to Fane. Now, the Providence City Plan Commission will meet on Wednesday, April 25 to consider Fane's request for a zoning variance for the proposed height of the tower.

Olin Thompson with the Jewelry District Association spoke with GoLocal about the effort to show just how high 460 feet would be -- and while it would make it the tallest structure in Providence, the developer could be looking to go even higher.

A "38 Tower" advocacy effort was recently started to draw attention to the Fane proposal, and includes poll results that showed a "4 to 1" opposition rate by respondents.

In July 2017, GoLocal reported, "Tower’s Viability Questioned, Developer Wants $15M in RI Subsidies & Tens of Millions from Prov."

A consultant hired by the I-195 Commission picked apart the proposed plan by New York City developer Jason Fane to build a residential skyscraper tower in Providence, questioning the developer's assumptions -- and viability of the project -- before the commission voted Tuesday evening for the project to move forward.

The battle between the analysis by the consultant hired by the state agency and the developer was just one of many points of contention during the nearly three-hour meeting of the Commission, with union bosses turning out in support of the project, and potential neighbors and concerned residents questioning the size and scope of the project.
