UPDATED: New Orleans - 15 Killed and 35+ Injured by Car Ramming People on Bourbon St.

Fifteen people were killed and 35 injured after a vehicle drove into a large crowd in New Orleans, on Canal and Bourbon Street, according to New Orleans' official disaster preparedness agency, NOLA Ready.

The number killed in the terror attack was increased from 10 to 15 early this evening by New Orleans Police.

New Orleans Superintendent of Police Anne Kirkpatrick said at a 7:40 AM press conference that the driver of the vehicle also shot at police.

Kirkpatrick also said that two police officers were shot. The FBI has taken over the investigation.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell said the event was a "terror attack."

The number of people injured has risen to 35 or more, according to Kirkpatrick.

City officials said they would hold another press conference at 11 AM.

“The 8th District is currently working a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street. There are 30 injured patients that have been transported by NOEMS (New Orleans Emergency Medical Services) and 10 fatalities. Public safety partners are responding on scene. Updates will follow as they are received.”

It is unknown if the police have made any arrests.

The incident occurred just hours before New Orleans is expected to host The Sugar Bowl, with the University of Georgia taking on Notre Dame.

There are 30 injured that have been transported by NOEMS to the following hospitals:

University Medical Center
Touro Hospital
East Jefferson General Hospital
Ochsner Medical Center Jefferson Campus
Ochsner Baptist Campus

There are 10 fatalities.

Public safety partners are responding on scene.

NOEMS will continue to operate responding to 911 calls with additional units staged in the downtown area. We are asking that residents and visitors please call 911 for emergencies only.
