NEW: Ortiz Survives Surgery, Tells Doctor, “Please Don’t Let Me Die, I Am a Good Man”
Video shows Ortiz sitting with friends in a club when a lone gunman approached Otiz from behind and shot the Red Sox great.
“Please don’t let me die, I am a good man,” said Ortiz, at the clinic.

Dominican journalist Dionisio Soldevila Tweeted out the Ortiz's plea on Sunday night after speaking with his doctors, who reportedly relayed it to him.
“The doctor in emergency says [Ortiz was] shot between the left side of the lower back and left through the abdomen,” Soldevila tweeted in Spanish.

Ortiz’s father, Leo Ortiz told reporters ad an ad hoc press conference outside the clinic that his son is expected to have a full recovery.
“I’m at peace knowing you out of danger; you a strong man Compai, can’t wait to hear your voice. My thoughts and prayers are with you, see you soon.
Me siento tranquilo de saber que estás fuera de peligro, usted es fuerte Compai, ya quiero oírle la voz. Orando, nos vemos pronto,” Tweeted Ortiz’s friend and former Red Sox great Pedro Martinez.
The motivation for the shooting is not known.
Dominican news El Dia, reports, "Santo Domingo.- Major League Baseball player David Ortíz was shot and wounded this night in an incident that occurred in the Dial nightclub of Avenida Venezuela, Santo Domingo Este. The renowned former player was with a group of friends in the center of fun when the person so far unidentified entered and shot him. After being injured in one leg, Ortíz was transferred to the Comprehensive Medical Center, located in [...]"
Dominican news source Listin Dario reports in Spanish:
David Ortiz, expelotero de Grandes Ligas y astro del Salón de la Fama Nacional de Coopertown, fue herido de bala esta noche en un bar de la avenida Venezuela, en Santo Domingo Este, donde también habría resultado herido el comunicador Joel López.
Ortiz fue trasladado de inmediato a un centro de salud, aunque se ha comentado que estaba en Plaza de la Salud. También se reportó que era asistido por médicos en una unidad del 911, mientras la policía tenía bajo arresto al agresor.
Imágenes de video muestran a un hombre, con el rostro ensangrentado, que presuntamente estaba sentado cerca de Ortiz, se paró de su asiento y disparó a Ortiz en la pelvis. Otra versión de una mujer que estuvo cerca cuando ocurrió el incidente dijo que unos individuos se desmontaron para disparar contra una persona, pero el disparo alcanzó a Ortiz.
Según se informó, el disparo lo hizo uno de dos hombres, que se desplazaban en una motocicleta. Uno de los agresores fue golpeado por civiles que se encontraban en el lugar y se encuentra apresado.
