NEW: Power Surge Destroys DEM's Phone System

A power surge in the telephone equipment room at the Department of Environmental Management’s Providence headquarters last night destroyed the phone system’s power source and maintenance port. As a result, both incoming and outgoing calls to DEM staff and offices at 235 Promenade Street are not going through.

Repair crews on site, but the Department does not know when the system will be up and running. In the meantime, the public is asked to contact DEM via email. A full list of DEM office and staff email addresses is available on the DEM website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on “Contact Us” on the left side of the homepage, then “DEM Staff List.”

Telephone service is available for DEM’s Division of Law Enforcement, located in the Foundry Building in Providence. The Division may be reached at 222-3070. Phone services at all other DEM facilities are functioning and have not been affected by the power surge.
