Raimondo Changes Mind, Will Fly State Flag at Half-Staff for Cianci

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo on Friday changed her position on not flying the flag at half-staff for the passing of former Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci.

The State flag will now fly at half-staff for Cianci's wake and funeral

"Out of respect for the office that former Mayor Cianci held for 20 years, the Governor has decided to lower the Rhode Island flag during the period of the funeral services, for theperiod when he lies in repose, and the funeral," said Marie Aberger in the Governor's office.

Recent Controversy

On Thursday, Raimondo announced she would not be ordering the flag to be flown at half-staff for Cianci, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 74. 

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza had announced Thursday that the city flag would fly at half-staff, but that the U.S. and state flags were under the direction of the Governor.
