NEW: RI Comic Con Apologizes for Attempting to Control Press Coverage

Rhode Island Comic Con has apologized and changed its press policy following backlash by the Rhode Island Press Association, as well as the Rhode Island Convention Center and Dunkin' Donuts Center after it tried to restrict the freedom of speech of the press at its upcoming event.

Comic Con had originally insisted that news organizations planning to cover the upcoming event pledge to avoid "insulting or disrespectful comments and giving a bad image of the show."

Last year, overcrowding at the event led to the State Fire Marshall and social media being "less than pleased" with the event.

Comic Con Response

It has been brought to our attention that a section within our press pass application contains questionable phrasing that suggests that the management and staff of Rhode Island Comic Con intends to control and/or influence the content that members of the press may publish.

This is in no way Rhode Island Comic Con’s intention and the application has been removed from our website. The management and staff hold freedom of the press in a very high regard. The press had contributed significantly to the success of Rhode Island Comic Con over the last three years, and will continue to do so in the future. Rhode Island Comic Con values greatly the influence that the press has and in no way wishes to restrict members of the press from reporting their experiences with the audience.

The press application in question will be revised and any mention of the questionable content will be removed. Rhode Island Comic Con will repost a new application to their website at www.ricomiccon.com within the upcoming days. In the interim, members of the press are encouraged to contact Susan Soares via email at [email protected] or by phone at 401.633.5428.
Rhode Island Comic Con, its management, and staff wholeheartedly apologize for any misunderstanding this oversight has caused
