RI Independent Contractors Oppose New Toll Plan

The Rhode Island Independent Contractors & Associates (RIICA) have announced their opposition to the new proposal of "collaboration" on the imposition of tolls in Rhode Island.

"What is shocking is that all of the "collaborators" continue to maintain that their proposal doesn't impose any new taxes!" said Bob Lafleur, Executive Director of RIICA and Matt Olson, President said on Monday.

Lafleur reiterated the RIICA plan which calls for refinancing of GARVEE bonds and the use of new federal funding via the FAST Act as "significant and sufficient revenue sources" of more than $55 million each year for bridge repair.

Olson and Lafleur also expressed concern with the change of heart in the RI Trucking Association's position of "how much ground this group gained."

"While they continue to be fundamentally opposed to tolling, they recognize the bill is very different than what the governor proposed last year. Are they kidding? This bill walks like a duck and talks like a duck - the imposition of tolls and adding undue burden on Rhode Island taxpayers with a $300 million bond," Lafleur said.

Olson has asked Rhode Islanders to heed his call to object and oppose this new plan and ask that they call their legislators and insist on their opposition to any toll plan and any increase in taxes, fees or new bonds.

Both Olson and Lafleur expressed hope that all legislators act like they were elected to do and that was supposed to represent he very people that put them in office, not the special interest.
