NEW: RI Unemployment Rate Increased in December

The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training announced Thursday that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate had risen to 9.1% during December of 2013.

December saw an exodus of about 1,500 jobs from the state, as seasonally adjusted unemployment climbed a tenth of a percentage point from the previous month. The number of those available for and actively seeking work rose to 49,900.

While the numbers represent a decrease of almost a percentage point since December of 2012, when the percentage of those seeking work was 9.8% and the number of unemployed was at 56,600, the beginning of 2014 still sees the Rhode Island attempting to escape from the economic mire in which it has been stuck for several years. The national unemployment rate for December 2013 stands at 6.7%.
