NEW: Speaker Fox Files Another Board of Elections Complaint
House Speaker Gordon Fox has file a complaint with the Board of Elections after his Independent opponent Mark Binder failed to report a $2,000 ad buy on his recent campaign finance report.
“These commercials do not produce themselves,” said Bill Fischer, spokesperson for the Gordon Fox campaign. “Clearly there are individuals providing services to the Binder campaign that exceed contribution limits of $1,000. We believe this is being done purposefully and in a coordinated fashion. We know that when candidates buy TV time, they have to pay for it at the time of placement. Purchases were made October 16 that Mr. Binder refuses to account for. At this point Mr. Binder has committed a series of campaign finance violations, all while campaigning on a ‘reform’ platform – the hypocrisy speaks for itself.”
Recent radio ads benefitting the Binder campaign included the voice of Rob LaChance, head of R.J. LaChance Advertising, the same agency that purchased the TV advertising for the Binder campaign.
“By not disclosing one of his largest expenditures, Mr. Binder is clearly hiding where he gets his money and how he spends it,” said Fischer. “Mr. Binder is attempting to conceal his relationship with the LaChance agency. This is a reaction to the complaints we have filed with the state Board of Elections and it is further proof that the radio ads placed last week by a Connecticut resident were done in a coordinated manner with the Binder campaign – yet another campaign finance violation.”
The Binder campaign released the following statement:
"Mark Binder filed his own campaign finance reports and accidently forgot to list out the $1,700 expense for the TV run on Cox Communications. Clearly this was not intended to hide anything as he had previously provided that information to a local media outlet.
"The Fox campaign is flailing, ginning up legal complaints whenever they can to generate headlines in the hope of shifting attention to the new questions being raised about Speaker Fox role in the Providence Economic Development Partnership loan scandal and ongoing concerns about his central role in creating the 38 Studios mess.
"Gordon Fox is upset that someone has dared to run against him and is running a TV ad which points out his failures in leadership and the fact he has left the people of District 4 behind. It is laughable that he would put so much time and research into his opponent's campaign filings for the simple reason that if he had put such time and effort into researching the 38 Studios deal and some of the questionable PEDP loans he has been involved in, it would have saved taxpayers over $100 million."
