NEW: State Budget Due Tomorrow—Chafee Asks for Extension

Governor Lincoln Chafee has sent a letter to the leaders of the General Assembly asking them to grant him an extension on the legal deadline for submitting a budget—which is tomorrow.

In the letter, dated Feb.1, Chafee asks if it’s OK for him to instead hand it in on March 10.

Attached to the letter is legislation which both the House and the Senate would have to pass to make the extension legal.

Asked why the extension was needed, Chafee spokesman Christian Vareika said it was "usual and customary" for a new administration to ask for it.
