NEW: State Rep. John McCauley Sentenced to 27 Months in Prison

Outgoing State Representative John McCauley was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to defraud the United States and filing false tax returns.

McCauley also resigned prior to the sentence.

In September, McCauley and business partner William L’Europa admitted that they underreported business receipts for tax years 2007 – 2010 by nearly $1.8 million dollars, resulting in the underpayment of federal taxes to the Internal Revenue Service of more than $500,000.

McCauley did not for re-election. Former State Rep. Thomas Palangio was elected to McCauley’s District 1 seat in November.
