NEW: State Takes Over Central Falls School District

The state is taking over the Central Falls school district and will handle negotiating union contracts, the Rhode Island Department of Education has announced.

The decision comes a week after Governor Chafee encouraged Commissioner Deborah Gist to become more involved with the city’s schools after a judge declared the school district could not be a part of the city’s bankruptcy filing.

Central Falls filed for bankruptcy last August.
