NEW: State to Receive $230 Million from Google

Several state law enforcement agencies will receive $230 million from the $500 million forfeited last year by Google Inc. after investigators found the search engine giant allowed online ads promoting illegal prescriptions drugs to appear on its site, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced today.

The matter was investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Rhode Island and the Rhode Island FDA/OCI Task Force.

The funds were forfeited by Google for allowing online Canadian pharmacies to place advertisements through its AdWords program targeting consumers in the United States, resulting in the unlawful importation of controlled and non-controlled prescription drugs into the United States.
