NEW: Taft-Carter rules Providence Pension Changes “Fair”

Providence’s landmark pension reform changes have survived a key hurdle as Superior Court Judge Sarah Taft-Carter has just issues a ruling that the deal agreed to by the city’s current firefighters, police offices and retirees is a fair, adequate and reasonable settlement.

While individual retirees may choose whether or not to opt out by April 1, Taft-Carter said the deal reached, which is one of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras’ biggest methods to reduce the city’s large structural deficit he inherited upon taking office, can stand as written.
