NEW: Taveras Seeks Ethics Opinion

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is seeking an opinion from the Rhode Island Ethics Commission involving a potential conflict of interest between his past work as an attorney and current role as an elected official.

Taveras has told the commission that there could be a possible conflict with his role as the chairman of the Providence Economic Development Partnership—a position that he holds by virtue of being mayor. He has asked the commission what the “appropriate process” is for handling a loan application that has been submitted to the partnership and is related to legal work he did before being elected mayor, according to a meeting agenda posted for the commission.

The Ethics Commission is set to hold a hearing on the matter tomorrow.
