NEW: Westerly HS Student Says School Didn't Immediately Tell Them of Shooting

A Westerly High School student relays what happened when the school was places on lockdown - and finally alerted to the shooting that took place in town that has 2 dead and 2 wounded.
A Westerly High School student says the school did not immediately tell students about the shooting in the town after placing the building on lockdown.

The student, identified as William, talked with GoLocalProv News Editor Kate Nagle just minutes after being dismissed from school.

“We didn’t really get any information. They weren’t telling us for a while and then they finally told us. We were all basically relaxed in the gym and everything and that's when they told us to go right to lockdown,” said William.

He added, “I was kind of scared at first, but I thought it was just one of the practice drills because they told us this before. So at first, I thought it must be fine and everything, and that's when our teacher brought us to a different room because they said there was an active shooter in Westerly.”

Westerly High school students were released at approximately 1 p.m. 

Latest on Westerly shooting

As GoLocalProv reported, the shooter is now dead from a self-inflicted wound in an apartment at the Babcock Village housing complex in Westerly, RI.

In total, two people are dead and two have been wounded.

None of the victims' names have been released.

The shooter was believed to be a tenant of the apartment complex in which the shooting took place.
