An off-duty Warwick Police Officer reportedly then went through a bar window and assaulted the individual and fled the scene.
Providence Police Detectives Major David Lapatin confirmed that there is currently an investigation underway.
“There was an assault — we are investigating,” Lapatin confirmed to GoLocal on Friday. “We believe an off-duty Warwick Police officer was involved. The victim did go to the hospital and has since been released.”
Warwick Police Chief Brad Connor released the following to GoLocal Friday morning.
"We are aware of an incident that took place last night in the city of Providence involving 3 of our officers. We have been in touch with the Det Div from PPD and understand that they are currently investigating the matter but no arrests have been made at this time.
We will cooperate to every extent possible with their investigation. We hold our officers to high standard and will not tolerate any inappropriate or illegal activity.
We look forward to the opportunity for transparency but at this time we will not be making a public statement as doing so could violate the LEBOR and jeopardize our ability to file administrative charges."
Editor's Note: Initial reports were that the victim attempted to re-enter the bar through a window; it is been corrected to reflect police reports that the alleged assailant exited through the window.
