Oliver North will be named the National Rifle Association’s new president, the group announced on Monday.

North is a Fox News contributor and was a key figure in the Iran-Contra scandal.

"Oliver North is, hands down, the absolute best choice to lead our NRA Board, to fully engage with our members, and to unflinchingly stand and fight for the great freedoms he has defended his entire life," NRA executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre said in a statement.

North will retire from his position at Fox News and will become President in the next few weeks.

About North

North served as a National Security Council staff member during the Iran-Contra scandal in the late 1980s.

He was convicted in the scandal, but his convictions were vacated and reversed, and all charges against him were dismissed in 1991.

The scandal involved the illegal sale of weapons to Iran to encourage the release of U.S. hostages then held in Lebanon.

From 2001 to 2016, North hosted War Stories with Oliver North on Fox News.
