Rhode Island’s senior senator, Reed is a retired Army paratrooper whose name perennially comes up as a possibility for defense secretary. The problem with pulling Reed from the Senate is that the state’s governor is a political independent who could appoint a replacement not as friendly to Obama’s second-term agenda.
Tom Donilon
Obama’s national security adviser, Donilon has served in the State Department. He does not have military experience but has been closely tied to the president’s handling of the Afghanistan War.
General Flynn Connection
The Flynn connections are deep and he is brother to another U.S. Army General - Charlie Flynn. The two brothers are both URI ROTC grads. The Hill reports that the General, "Flynn was also the top intelligence officer at International Security Assistance Force-Afghanistan, working under former ISAF chiefs Gen. Stanley McChrystal and Gen. David Petraeus."
