State lawmakers are proposing a cut of $130 million in local aid to cities and towns in order to close the state budget deficit, according to 630 WPRO, a GoLocalProv media partner. The state is facing a $180 million deficit in the current fiscal year and another shortfall of $400 million next year. The deficit-reduction plan also cuts aid to school districts, but it does not call for any broad-based tax hikes, according to WPRO.
