Police Investigating Assault at Providence Church

Providence police are investigating a report of an assault at a church in downtown Providence. 

About Incident 

Shortly after noon on Saturday, police said responded to a call for an assault at the United Methodist Church on Matthewson Street.

According to police, they met with the victim — a male in his 30s — who said he had been helping in the church clothing distribution closet. 

The victim told police that a man came into the closet and confronted him, before punching him and hitting him with a cane.

The suspect then reportedly fled the scene.

Police say the victim had lacerations to his face; he was taken by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. 

Detectives are currently investigating.
