Providence police are urging residents to use caution after a man sexually assaulted a female college student this week and attempted to assault another woman.

According to police, they believe the suspect is staking out women during the day to determine when they might be home alone at night — and then entering through open windows.

About Incidents

Police were called to Rhode Island Hospital early Tuesday morning for a report of a sexual assault.

The female victim — a woman in her early 20s who is in college — said that she was alone in her apartment on Pembroke Avenue in the Elmhurst section of the city when she was awoken by a man attacking her.

He sexually assaulted her and then stole items before leaving the apartment; the woman determined he had come in through a window.

On Thursday morning, another woman reported an attempted sexual assault to police.

The victim — who lives two streets over from Pembroke on Pinehurst Avenue — said she was awoken shortly after 4:30 AM to a man in her bed.

Police say the victim told them she screamed loudly and the suspect fled; the second victim and police believe the suspect came through an open window as well.

Police are urging residents to use extreme caution and make sure all of their windows and doors are locked.

Detectives are currently investigating.
