The poll was conducted during the run up to the mid-term elections where various pro-marijuana policy initiatives went before voters in Oregon, Washington D.C. and Florida. In Florida, a constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana was proposed but it failed, only getting 57% of the 60% vote needed.
Gallup's poll also shows that it is much easier to gain support for legalizing marijuana amongst liberals then it is amongst moderates and conservatives.

The Gallup Poll results were conducted via phone interviews with over 1,000 adults living in the United States and the District of Columbia, age 18 and over.
