Prov Streets Coalition Rejects City Council Ordinance Impacting Road Improvement Projects

Prov Streets Coalition rejects City Council ordinance impacting road improvement projects
The Providence Streets Coalition is voicing their objection to a new ordinance of the Providence City Council that would add “unnecessary conditions to all roadway improvement projects.”

“Some of the recommended methods for further increasing public involvement in this ordinance, however, are either ineffective or counterproductive. For example, the requirement for the City to purchase newspaper ads to notify residents of upcoming hearings is both expensive, and inadequate for those who get their news in other ways,” writes the Coalition.

They add, “More importantly, the requirement for written consent from a majority of abutting property owners for any project approval is designed to delay or deny road projects that will increase safety and provide more transportation choices.”

The ordinance will be heard on Monday, March 9 at 5 p.m. in Committee Room B at Providence City Hall.

The Coalition is calling for citizens to attend the meeting and help protest the ordinance.

“Please join us on Monday, March 9 at 5 p.m. in Committee Room B to raise your voice against this ordinance, and contact the Committee to share your opposition,” writes the Coalition.

The group urges those who cannot attend the hearing, they can submit written testimony here.
